PTL Meeting Minutes

August 28, 2008

President Brian Simonton called the meeting to order.  New parents were welcomed to PTL and our school.

Opening Devotions:  Mrs. Boehne talked about our theme for this school year “Rooted in Christ”.  The supporting Bible verse comes from Colossians 2:6-7 and reads  “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”

Real roots go down into the dirt to get water and minerals.  What do we receive from Jesus?  We receive His love and grace and being rooted in God’s word.  Talk with your children, bring them to church, and share his word to help them understand how great God’s love is.

Secretary’s Report: The minutes from April 20, 2008 meeting were passed out on Monday. No changes were proposed.  A motion was made by Mr. Belli to accept as printed and seconded by Barb Fritsche.  Future meeting minutes will be posted to the school website under ACTIVITIES.

Treasurer’s Report:  Kim Deiters explained the budget and current checkbook balance.  The staff computers have been replaced.  Mrs. Boester estimates the computer lab update will be around $600 per computer with 25 computers for a total of $15,000.  The update may be possible this school year.  A motion to accept the Treasurer’s report was made by Joanne Kleiboeker and seconded by Pastor Krenz.

Sports Account:  Barb Fritsche reported that she has located all the missing old uniforms which possibly could be altered and used for Peewee players.  A uniform budget is needed for the future.  Pastor Krenz made a motion to allocate $1000 to a uniform budget and Mr. Belli seconded it.  Last year $2000 was spent on uniforms for the boys.   A request for new uniforms for the girls was made.  Mr. Belli explained that Scholar Bowl was to get new shirts this year, and the girls would get new uniforms next year.  A potential solution to alter the existing Scholar Bowl shirts from long sleeve to short sleeve was proposed.  That decision allowed for the purchase of new uniforms for the girls this year.  Mr. Belli made a motion for the purchase and Jason Peters seconded it.

Teachers’ Reports:

Mrs. Boehne:  After doing different activities with the book “The Wheels on the Bus”, we made our own book about all kinds of wheels – motorcycle, stroller, van, scooter, bike, and even wheels on shoes.  In Math, many manipulatives have been introduced and we count, do tally marks, graph, and learn shapes.  The interactive whiteboard has been used several times to play games so the children learn how to use their fingers like a mouse.  We have also listened to a book using the white board instead of me reading the story.  We looked at one of our author’s websites, saw how many different kinds of ladybugs there are, and even looked at pictures of ourselves working in the classroom.

Miss Harrison: Religion – We started with the unit entitled Changes.  This unit reminds us again of the changes God makes in our lives.  Jesus begins by calling us to repentance and taking away our sins.  The changes continue as the Holy Spirit leads us through God’s Word to grow in faith and to live by faith.  Daily our lives are changed by the many blessings God pours on us, spiritually and physically.  Our story next week is about Zacchaeus.

Science – We started with Life Science.  We have been talking about the differences in plants and what plants need to grow.  Right now we are doing some experimenting on what the amount of light will do to the growth of a plant.  We have one plant in all sunlight, one plant in all darkness and one plant in a box with a light hole cut in it.  Next week we will talk about the different parts of a plant, and the stages of growth.

Social Studies – We started with the unit entitled Families.  We have talked about how everyone is different and special and about how people grow and learn.  Next week we will talk about how families change.

Reading – Both classes have begun reading out of their reading books.  The first graders start out with small books that are just one story, and then they will move up to a bigger book with many stories.  Second graders just start with a BIG book, which they are excited about finally getting. They are all doing very well.

Math – We have worked on many things already.  I will just name a few of them for you.  First grade has worked on: ordering numbers, making towers for numbers and writing numbers.  Next week they will be identifying shapes and graphing.  Second grade has worked on reading and identifying numbers, telling time to the hour, and addition facts (doubles).  Next week they will be indentifying attributes of pattern blocks and indentifying ordinal position.

As you can see we have been very busy already, but we have been having a lot of fun.  I am excited about all of my students and am ready for a great year.

Mr. Tyberendt:  English – We have been working on our new Shurley English series.  We are working on being organized.  The first several lessons relate to organizational skills.

Science – We are working on living things – mainly plants right now.  We are learning about the parts of a flower and how seeds form.  We have been looking at seeds and growing seeds will come next week.  We have also been looking at how veins (tubes) run through the stem.

Social Studies – We are studying communities.  Hoffman is a good example of how a community is established and what it takes to run one.

Mrs. Spenner:  We are off to a good start in 5th and 6th grade.  In Religion we are learning about how God’s Word comes to us.  This is an overview of the Bible.  Our main focus this year will be on the Old Testament.  We are also learning about the Early Americans in Social Studies and how to stay healthy in Science.  6th grade is starting their second year using Shurley English and they are very helpful to me as I instruct the 5th graders who have never had this before.  The biggest news in 5th and 6th grade is in Reading.  We are starting Literacy Centers.  This is a great way to be sure that the kids are learning in all areas of Literacy each day.  It will also give me a chance to work in smaller groups with kids so that I can monitor their progress better.  Our big field trip will be to Springfield, IL sometime in late October or November.  We will go there to see the Lincoln sites as well as to see our State’s capital.

Mrs. Boester: The first two weeks have flown by!  We begin our day with devotions.  This year we are beginning in Matthew and hope to complete the New Testament by May.  We are learning to use the new Shurley English program.  My 7th grade students are the “resident experts” as they used this series last year.  This is going well so far.  In addition to our textbook lessons in Literature, students are required to read an additional four novels outside of class each quarter.  Math is going well.  We are using three different assessment tools to identify which level students are ready for in 7th and 8th grade.  Students have been placed in their appropriate levels and are making progress already.  I am enjoying teaching 3rd/4th grade math as well as 5th/6th grade math.  These classes have started with a bit of review and are moving right along.

Mr. Belli: Chapel shirts order deadline is Aug. 29.  Certified birth certificates are state mandated under the Missing Children’s Law.  There is a Missing Children’s Act in Congress which has not passed yet but will allow the school office to make a copy of the certified birth certificate.  Oct. 18 is a Family Convocation Conference at Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle.  Registration forms will be coming shortly.  Bids for video cameras in the front of school were more costly than expected so we are waiting for the next grant before moving forward.  The locker room was painted by 8th grade for their service project but carpet must still be installed.  A motion was made by Joanne Kleiboeker for $860 and seconded by Pastor Krenz to pay for carpet installation.  A coach for girls basketball is needed.

Old Business: Tina Boehne reported the gym lighting installation has been delayed until October.  Joanne Kleiboeker reported a second check has been received from Feed the Frog recycling bin for $235.75.

New Business:    Barb Fritsche made a motion and Lena Bassen seconded it to hold PTL Meetings as scheduled, four times per year, on Monday evenings at 6:30pm.

Apple Butter will be made on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27.   Lena Bassen will be the chairperson.  The price will be $6.00 per quart and $4.00 per pint.  A motion was made by Lena Bassen and seconded by Mr. Belli to make Apple Butter on dates as planned and Barb Fritsche motioned to raise the price and Lena Bassen seconded it.

Harvest Party will not be held this year since the school has Jump for Heart scheduled on Oct. 30.  Mr. Belli will let us know if help is needed from PTL.

A discussion was held about existing and new fundraisers.

The chicken dinner will not be held this year due to a conflict with a scheduled church event.

A pledge envelope was proposed as an idea where parents could make a donation in lieu of fundraising.

New fundraisers of Little Caesars pizza kits, Yankee Candles, and Market Day were approved. Timing of each will be determined by required deadlines.  Jodi Palm will be the chairperson for the Yankee Candle fundraiser.

Mr. Belli made a motion to replace the Cheese and Sausage fundraiser with Little Caesars pizza kits and Lana Peters seconded it.  Joanne Kleiboeker made a motion to continue Butter braids/Cookie Dough fundraiser with the Little Caesars pizza kits, and Barb Fritsche seconded it. Tina Boehne will be the chairperson. A motion was made by Barb Fritsche and seconded by Karen Belli to kick off these fundraisers at Open House on Sept. 30 if possible.

Seth Crocker made a motion to add Market Day monthly grocery program if we qualify and Amanda Johnston seconded it.

A motion was made by Barb Fritsche with second by Joanne Kleiboeker to have Trivia Night on Nov. 7.  Jason Peters reported Trivia Night is ready to go after being cancelled last year and will chair the event.

Target REDcard users may go to Target.com/tcoe or call 1-800-316-6142 to designate our school.  When you use your REDcard (Target Visa Credit Card, Target Credit Card or Target Check Card), Target will donate up to 1% of your purchases to our school.

A chairperson incentive was discussed.  Pastor Krenz made a motion to provide a $100 tuition voucher as a “gratuity” to the Pork Chop Dinner Chairperson and the Auction Chairperson.  Randy Tate seconded the motion.   Chairpeople are needed for both the Dinner and Auction.

Calendar Sales will begin next week and be due back by Sept. 26.  Sherry Wessel is the chairperson.   A few more helpers are needed to take folders for calendar sales.  No price change to the calendar or ads and money is to be collected in advance.  If you’re interested in helping with the calendar sales, please contact Sherry Wessel.

A Sports Chairperson is needed to “shadow” Barb Fritsche as this will be her last year to manage the concessions and sports schedule.  Call Barb is you are interested.   Barb reported it’s not as involved as perceived.

A treasurer “trainee” is also needed as this will be Kim Deiters’ last year to be Treasurer.  Please contact Kim is you are interested.

Attendance Prizes:

10 milk tickets to Seth Crocker and 10 milk tickets to Chris Michael.  10 lunch tickets to Jodi Palm.

A motion was made to adjourn the meeting by Caroline Tate and seconded by Joann Kleiboeker.

The next PTL meeting will be held on Monday, October 27 at 6:30pm.
